This Rice Krispies Treats recipe is hands-down the best version of this dessert. That is, if you like peanut butter. You don’t even have to love peanut butter, just like it. There are two pieces to this recipe that make it a textural masterpiece (if I do say so myself); adding peanut butter to the gooey melted marshmallow mixture and also reserving some of the marshmallows to add later once everything is mixed together. The peanut butter makes the texture chewier, and the added marshmallows only partially melt leaving swirls of marshmallow throughout. It’s mind blowing.

You get extremely moist and chewy rice krispies treats as opposed to dense and dry rice krispies treats. That is, if you don’t add too many rice krispies and also if you don’t pack the mixture down too much when pressing into the 9×13 dish. These are a contender for top spot of my all-time favorite dessert. They’re so simple to make, require no bake-time and everyone will be amazed at this upgraded version. I wish I had a regular Rice Krispies Treats recipe to share with you, but I haven’t made them in ages ever since I came up with this recipe instead. But if you’re a peanut butter fan, you’ll probably want to check out my peanut butter sheet pan brownies while you’re here.

Tips for the Best Peanut Butter Rice Krispies Treats

  • Use smooth peanut butter for this recipe.
  • Make sure to use the 16 oz bag of big marshmallows! I’ve made this mistake before. There are two sizes, be sure to get the 16 oz.
  • Stop at 5 C of Rice Krispie’s and assess the texture. Only add another cup if you want a bit drier treat.
  • Line your 9×13 pan or dish in parchment paper. This is a must, or the treats will stick to the pan.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Salted butter
  • 1 c Smooth peanut butter
  • 16 oz Large marshmallows big bag
  • 5-6 c Rice Krispie’s

Instructions

  • Melt butter and peanut butter together over medium heat in a large pot.
  • Once melted add marshmallows but reserve 15 marshmallows to add later.
  • Continue stirring to keep the bottom from browning.
  • Once the marshmallows have fully melted add the Rice Krispie's one cup at a time stirring each time.
  • Stop at 5 cups and assess if your treats are wet enough. If you want them a bit drier add another cup.
  • Once mixed add the 15 reserved marshmallows and stir.
  • Pour out into a parchment lined or buttered 9x13 dish.
  • With wet hands press the mixture into the dish gently. You don't want to compact the Rice Krispie's too much or they'll get dense.
  • Let rest for 30 minutes then slice and serve.
